Reggae Concert

Here is a concert by a Jamaican reggae band at The American Folk Festival in Bangor over the weekend. The 3-day event attracted more tourists to the area than any other events. The photo was taken on Friday night when it was dry and cool. It rained all day Saturday so I went back on Sunday morning to see more bands.

So what is the weather like where you are at?

Caterpillar

I almost stepped on this little fellow on my way home yesterday. It is a green caterpillar crawling across the street. I quickly got down on my knees and elbows to photograph it. I took over 20 macro shots, include a couple with it rearing it's head up staring at me but they did not come out well focused. This is the best one of the lot.

So why did the caterpillar cross the road? :-)

So what is the weather like in your neighborhood?

Raindrops on Flowers

After a week of high humidity and sweltering heat, the weather here finally cooled down with a little rain. I find that rain makes for a great opportunity to go out and take some interesting photographs.

So do you go out in the rain?

Mussels Clams Fish

This is the sign on the side of the Lobster Shack truck parked at the Orono Farmers' Market. The price of fresh lobster has fallen to about $3.50/lb in Maine because of low demand due to the economic downturn around the country.

So when was the last time you had lobster?

Stigmas & Stamens

Here is a macro shot of the reproductive system of a flower -- the stigmas and stamens. I guess this is the only PG-rated sexual organs I can show on the blog.

So what are your plans for the weekend?

Downtown Bangor

This is Main Street in historic downtown Bangor. The area has been making a come back with new restaurants and shops opening in the last couple of years. The only other shopping area in Bangor is off the interstate highway where the mall and chain restaurants are located.

So what is your downtown area like?

Daddy Long Legs

This Daddy Long Leg spider was seen walking around the leaves at the Orono Blog. The insect is pretty harmless to humans but deadly for small mosquitoes and flies.

So which part of your body is your best feature?

Steeple

This steeple belongs to one of three main churches in downtown Bangor. I am not sure which church it belongs to but the height of it makes for a beautiful skyline.

So what is the tallest building in your neighborhood?

University of Maine, Orono

This is the main lawn on the University of Maine campus at Orono. I was there last weekend to attend a photography seminar on natural photography.

So where did you go to school?

Blooms in the Summer

I went back to the Orono Bog yesterday morning to take some more photos but left after about half an hour because I was being eaten alive by mosquitoes. The next time I go back again, I will have to put on some insect repellents and wear jeans and a long sleeve shirt.

So what sacrifices have your made for your photographs?

Purple & White

These purple and white cauliflowers were some of the selection of organically grown vegetables at the Orono Farmer's Market every Tuesday and Saturday.

So do you like cauliflower? If so, how do you like them cooked?

Norumbega Parkway

This statue at the Norumbega Parkway represents the war memorial for the city of Bangor. The small square is located right downtown near all the shops, cafes and restaurants.

The red building on the right is a luxury condominium with underground parking and an indoor swimming pool. Three units in the building are now on the market for between $180,000 (2-bedroom) to $230,000 (penthouse).

So do you prefer to live in a condominium or a house with a backyard?

Itsy Bitsy Spider

The itsy bitsy spider crawled up the water spout.
Down came the rain, and washed the spider out.
Out came the sun, and dried up all the rain
And the itsy bitsy spider went up the spout again.

iPhone Wednesday #1

Kim of Seattle Daily Photo started a photo theme a couple months ago called iPhone Wednesday and since then, Chuck of One A Day - Mostly Seattle has joined in. I am posting my first iPhone Wednesday photo today.

This photo was taken in front of McLachlan Seafood, Inc. on Main Street in Bangor. On one side of the building is a retail store that sells live lobsters as well as other seafood items. On the other side is a lobster shack that serves steamed lobsters, baked clams and a host of other seafood dishes.

So what is your favorite seafood dish?

Investment Advice

Bangor Wine & Chesse, a beautiful wine and cheese store on Hammond Street in downtown Bangor has some great advice for its customers. And I believe they are right.

So are you a wine or beer drinker?

Stillwater River

I was out and about all weekend because the weather was spectacular. The sky was clear, the sun was bright and the humidity was low. It was simply perfect. This photo was taken at the edge of the Stillwater River in Orono. I wish I could kayak down the river.

So how was your weekend?

Smith Farm Sign Board

This photo was taken at the Orono Farmer's Market in Orono, Maine. The vendor for Smith Farm is seen here writing the sign board for his booth that sells vegetables farmed with horse-drawn equipment.

So what modern equipment can you NOT live without?

Pendulum

This pendulum like contraption swung and turned/twirled on its axis giving thrill seekers the time of their lives at the Bangor State Fair last weekend. The fair ends this coming Sunday.

So what are your plans this weekend?

Purple Thistle

I saw these blooms by the river a couple weeks ago. I don't know if they are flowers or seed pods but they were definitely eye catching.

Does anyone know what they are?

Reflection

This photo was taken at Giacomo's where I usually get my coffee on Saturdays. The cafe serves a great selection of Italian style paninis and desserts.

So do you usually go out for brunch or breakfast on the weekends?

Stephen King's Other House

This is the house where Stephen King and his family (supposedly) really live. From what I heard, the reason he does not live in the original house anymore is because fans have come up and rung his door bells once too many times.

So do you prefer to be famous OR be anonymous?

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

Tracy *Heart* Cassie

This interesting sign professing love for Cassie is posted on a tree across the Kenduskeag Stream in Bangor. The stream runs through the city towards the Penobscot River downtown.

So have you ever professed your love to someone publicly?

Wild Flower Everywhere

This lace-like wild flower is everywhere in Maine -- on the side of the interstate highways, on the edge of the parking lots, surrounding abandoned buildings and anywhere that has not been mowed.

Does anyone know what this is?

Update: The wild flower is called Queen Anne's Lace, wild carrot, bird's nest or bishop's lace.

Ferris Wheel

This ferris wheel at the Bangor State Fair is one of the many rides at the fair ground. The annual event opened yesterday and it will be here until next Sunday.

Theme Photo: Night

This is the first of the month which means it's theme photo day. The theme for August is 'Night'. This photo was taken at the Bangor State Fair at around 8 PM on Saturday evening. The sun has set but the sky remained blueish.
